Vision 2020 and Westpac get involved in snap for sight
12 October 2015
In Australia, we are still not doing enough to look after our eye sight and as a result Vision 2020 Australia has developed a new social media campaign to encourage more people to value their sight and get their eyes tested.
Launched on World Sight Day - 8 October and running throughout October - #snapforsight is celebrating the importance of sight by asking Australians to think about what they would miss if they could no longer see (Scenes like the above Golden Temple in Japan.).
CEO of Vision 2020 Australia, Jennifer Gersbeck, said many Australians still think that vision loss and blindness is something that happens to other people.
“But the reality is 575,000 Australians are blind or vision impaired, and this statistic will increase to close to one million by 2024 as Australians live longer and we see a growth in the number of people with diabetes,” Jennifer said.
“The good news is that 75 per cent of blindness and vision loss is preventable or treatable.
But regular eye tests are crucial to caring for our sight as many eye conditions have no symptoms or pain associated with them.”
#snapforsight is a positive campaign that is tapping into Australians’ love of sharing images across social media.
“We are asking people to snap a photo of something they cherish, post it to social media with the hashtag #snapforsight and encourage others to do the same. The aim is that Australians will make the connection between what they cherish and the need to make their eye health a priority,” Jennifer said.
“The response to the campaign to date has been overwhelming with images being posted to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram across the globe.”
A purpose-built microsite www.snapforsight.com.au is showcasing the beautiful tapestry of images that serve to remind people what’s important in life.
“Children, pets, sunsets and images of travel adventures are among the photographs that people have uploaded to date,” said Jennifer.
As part of the campaign, Vision 2020 Australia has also asked Australian parliamentarians and Westpac staff to get involved in the campaign.
