Is the Prime Minister spoiling for a fight about the Republic
27 January 2015
I remember hearing from one of his Parliamentary colleagues some years ago that the now Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, had an eccentric streak, which may go some way toward explaining his recent extraordinary decision to appoint Prince Philip a knight of the Order of Australia.
Certainly my only personal brush with Mr Abbott was at the funeral some years ago now of a friend who had been a student at St Ignatius College Riverview.
It struck many of us that Mr Abbott turning up to the funeral was a bit odd… but as a Riverview old boy not unreasonable. However when he then joined family and close friends at the burial site, this raised eyebrows.
Can the appointment of the Prince be chalked up to his eccentric side or is it a ploy to reignite the Republic debate?
What do you think?
