The Rainbow Jersey

As a parochial ‘Perthite’ I am always excited when something new happens in town and particularly when it’s a world first. Throw in the involvement of a member of my family and a good friend and I’m really excited.
From 14 – 17 April this year Perth will host the first ever UWCT world event. What’s that you say? Well it is masters cycling – a competitive, participation sport that’s become the new golf in cities around the world. Lycra glad guys and girls in singles and groups dominate the roads and cycle paths around the Swan River most early mornings and particularly on the weekends.
For the last 17 years the small Austrian town of St Johan im Tirol has held the world championships for masters cycling – age classifications from 30 years up to 65 plus! Starting this year the world cycling body UCI has decided to conduct a world tour across a number of countries as qualifiers for the eventual world championships to be held in the Ardennes, Belgium in September. Perth will host the first qualifier – we’ll see some really serious and exciting racing with a time trial on Rottnest Island and a 140km road race over 11 laps of a 14 km city taking in Kings Park.
My friend Kate Lamont, chair of Tourism WA has been instrumental in ensuring that Perth was in the hunt for this race and my brother Craig is leading the event promotion team – he’ll probably ride the races too! Don’t look for me this year but maybe next year!
