How To Build Resilience (and make life a little easier)

There’s no doubt about it we’re living through one of the most challenging periods in living memory.

The coronavirus pandemic has tested all of us. It's been tough.

In challenging times, we need our resilience and mental tuffness to get us through. This doesn’t mean we need to feel happy or positive all the time. But it does mean that when we get knocked down, we get back up again, and have confidence that better days are ahead.

Researcher Dr Angela Duckworth suggests mental toughness and perseverance is the most important factor in achieving your goals in business, health and life.

But a good bank of resilience doesn't just help us kick some serious goals. It also makes our lives a little easier. Because when we’ve been through tough and trying circumstances before, and we were fine, we know we can do it again. And again. And again.

The scary things don’t seem so scary anymore.

So how do you build your resilience?

Set A Big Hairy Audacious Goal

To build resilience, we need to get out of our comfort zones. Because your comfort zone is, well, comfortable.

Fred DeVito was right when he said, "if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you." 

To get out of your comfort zone, you need to set yourself a goal. And yep - it needs to scare you. Committing to a scary, physical challenge will motivate you to make plans to achieve your goal and change your habits.

The new habits you build preparing for your Big Hairy Audacious Goal will test your perseverance, resilience and mental and emotional toughness, just a little bit, every day.

For example, you might decide to sign up for the Stayin’ Wild Challenge. Each week, you’ll be challenged a little more by adding puffing, lifting heavy things, and agility to your daily routine.

Change Your Mindset

Mental tuffness isn’t just something you have from birth. It’s built up over time. Just like a muscle, you need to use it for it to grow and develop.

Life challenges, like grief, loss, heartbreak, or a global pandemic, can strike us at any time. But when we have resilience, we’re more equipped to deal with those challenges and cope. We’ll even come out the other side stronger.

If you’re struck in a mindset that challenging yourself is too hard, too scary, too stressful – ultimately, your life will be harder, not easier. When you have a mindset of positivity and resilience, you will look at life with a can-do attitude and a sense of optimism. 

If you find you’re stuck in an unhelpful mindset, speak to a loved one, a family member, a bestie, or a hiking buddy and ask for their support.

For example, if you’re finding yourself saying, ‘these 10 sets of stairs for the Stayin’ Wild Challenge are too hard, I can’t do it’, share this with your teammate. Workshop a way to make the challenge more manageable. You’ll come to an “I can” realisation, instead of an ‘I can’t’ one.

Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone A Little Every Day

If you’re stuck in your comfort zone and you don’t push yourself in little ways every day (or most days) you will struggle to handle things when life gets tough.

Practise taking the harder option every day in every way.

Add an extra set of stairs when your legs are burning.
Walk an extra kilometre, even if you're tired.
Have that difficult conversation, even if your heart is fluttering.
Walk instead of drive.
Do one extra pushup.
Because you will prove to yourself that, yep, you CAN do it. You’re more capable, and you’re stronger, than you give yourself credit for.
