Your Time, Your Self Worth

A number of years ago I attended a Tony Robbins Life Mastery event in Hawaii.  Even though climbing a 40 foot power pole was a definite highlight, one story shared at the conference has stuck in my mind.


Tony shared a story that has stayed in my mind and changed my perception about the value of time, and how important this is.


A factory is ground to an absolute halt due to mechanical failure.  Losing millions of dollars an hour.  An expert technician comes in and out of thousands of possibilities finds the one $2 fuse that needs replacing and will put the factor back into operation.  The fuse is fixed, the factory is back on track.  The technician provides his invoice, and asked for circa $250K for the job.  The factory owner is incensed.  How could he charge that much for a $2 fuse?  The technician threatens to ground the factory to a halt by going back in and removing the fuse again.  He tells the factory owner, the fuse may be worth $2 and the knowledge of knowing which fuse to fix is worth $249,998.00.


So how do you define success?


“Until you value yourself, you won’t value your time.  Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.” M. Scott Peck.   


This story changed my life because it is such a superb example of the value of self and how this is measured against time.  On the day I heard this story I made a decision to measure my success by skill and not by time.  Too many professions today trade time for income, in both employment and small business.  To me this is no way to make a life and a living.  As a consultant it took every bit of courage for me to step out of the hourly and day rate rat race and base my earnings on success.  The model I work with is the ultimate source of leverage and time.  It’s a gift.


If you are having a moment where you start to agree with yourself and have the knowledge that says, “I value myself, and my time,” there are three things you could do today to put yourself on track for success:


1. Determine your self worth, by looking at paralleling your career with a source of annuity income, until you replace your time based earnings.

2. Research and model successful business people who have both time and financial security, success leaves clues.

3. And in the words of Antia Roddick (founder of the Body Shop) “If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito.”
