These techniques come from the village of San Antonino Castillo Velasco, Oaxaca – famous for its brightly coloured, embroidered garments . With some updates to provide a better fit, and ideas for a more modern take on the traditional blouse, our first class will detail the different options available to make your blouse as simple or as detailed as you like, with reflections on relevant culture and history. During the course you will learn how to cut a pattern to fit your shape; draw and embroider the colourful, flowered bodice; crochet the edges of the neckline, sleeves and hem; and lastly the famous “hazme si puedes” or “make me if you can” – a kind of smocking that gathers the blouse at the bustline. These blouses are a perfect relaxed and colourful addition to your Summer wardrobe. Please note that you will need some existing embroidery and/or crochet skills to enrol. Some homework and additional time between classes may be required to complete the project depending on the complexity of your chosen design.
