The Millennials at the workplace

Baby Boomers and Generation X, move over. It is time to make way for the Millennials. Well, this may sound a little harsh on the previous generations, but phasing out one generation to make way for the next one is a fact of life. So, this is the time of the latest label for generational transition. Millennials are now in the prime of their productivity, and are set to swarm the workplace, so to speak. So, who are the Millennials, and what marks them apart? Millennials are the generation of people born in the two decades from 1980, plus or minus five years. This makes them the next wave in the workplace. How are they Millennials different? Well, we have to factor into account the fact that they were born at a time when the technological changes that are revolutionizing our lives had just taken root. In this sense, the Millennials and the latest wave of technological changes we are seeing today are almost conjoined twins. Differentiating characteristics This is the first generation to fully adapt and imbibe the newest technologies that have pervaded our lives. So, some characteristics make the Millennials different from the people of the previous generations: o They are more visually oriented, since present day technological tools and personal devices are more visual than textual o Related to this factor, it is also equally true that their attention span is highly limited. News organizations or product marketers have to pack as much punch as they can into their message in as few words as possible to reach out to the Millennials o They are expected to get bored of work that is repetitive. So, the Millennials have to be fed a variety of work o They are also not expected to show much loyalty to employers, no matter how much they are given and what benefits and facilities come at the workplace o They also don’t like being shouted at or being pushed into long hours of work. Is it any wonder that hardly a fifth of the managers says that Millennials can be trusted? All these make one wonder whether the Millennials are a boon or a curse.
